American Sniper

American Sniper

In a couple of months my wife and I will celebrate 40 years together. It’s pretty safe to assume after forty years we tend to think a lot alike and share many views when it comes to politics, religion, and social justice, just to name a few. Recently, however, she made a comment I had to totally disagree with.

Like many Americans we took the time last weekend to see the film, American Sniper. The film, directed by Clint Eastwood is based upon the book of the same name by Chris Kyle, a former US Navy SEAL credited as being one of, if not the, most lethal snipers in US history.

Unless you live in a vacuum, you’re probably aware it’s been quite a blockbuster, and it’s breaking several box office records.

Because of its subject matter, and I believe its success, it has also become a magnet for a number of anti-war, anti-military, and anti-American loudmouths looking for a few minutes of fame. The names are a who’s who of leftists and narcissists who see the success of this film, a testament to the men and women who go to war for our nation, as a way to put themselves back into the limelight.

It goes without saying, and is quite obvious most, if not all of these opportunists haven’t seen the film or read the book. If they have seen the film or read the book they have completely missed the message.

The message isn’t about heroism. It’s not about the glory of war. It’s not about being the top sniper in US history. This story is the story of men and women who put themselves in harm’s way for this nation.

In Chris Kyle’s case, his love of country gave him the motivation to volunteer as a sheepdog to protect his sheep. He, like me, and many of my fellow veterans love this country, its people, its history, its message, and its hope.

But while that love of country may have led many of us to volunteer for the military; that isn’t what we fight for. No, it’s the brother next to us, behind us, in front of us. At the end of the day, we fight; we fought, for our comrades.

The message of the movie was the love for each other that haunts so many who have fought and bled for this nation. It’s the emptiness our heroes feel when away from their brothers and sisters and the need to protect those on freedom’s frontier.

Bradley Cooper does a fantastic job of showing us what so many of our young combat veterans are going through. The returning veteran is haunted by those who were lost and those who may be lost if they’re not protected. The movie also shows the courage, love, and faith of family, friends, and comrades that ultimately brings our heroes home.

So when those who will remain nameless in this message ( if refuse to give them ANY free press) spew their hate, their ignorance, and their vitriol for our sons and daughters many, like my wife get angry. Not only does she get angry; she wants them to shut up. And that’s where I disagree.

I don’t want them to shut up. I want them to exercise the rights that have been paid by men and women better than them who have lost life, limb, and eyesight. I want those small, petty excuses for human beings to speak up loud and clear.

I want to know my enemy. I want them to come out into the light and stop hiding like cockroaches. I want the millions of people who spent their hard-earned money to honor the memory of Chris Kyle and all our combat veterans to know whom these vermin are.

And I pray, with all my being those same fine people who support Chris Kyle and his comrades will never, ever spend another minute listening to the detractors. They’ll never spend another minute watching their films, television shows, or reading their books. They’ll never spend another penny supporting them in any way.

Keep it up! Continue to show your stupidity and ignorance. You know who you are. Now go away…just go away.
